About the TESOL Club
The English as a second language (ESL) industry in Asia is undergoing a number of important changes. These range from the implementation of ESL training in the early years of elementary schools in Japan to the adoption of IELTS as a qualification acceptable for language literacy and numeracy requirements for entrance examinations to a variety of educational and employment opportunities. TESOL stands for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages and encompasses what used to be called TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) and TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language).The TESOL club at R-APU will focus on preparing students to work in the ESL industry throughout Asia and Japan upon graduation
Who is this club for?
・ Students who would like to practice their English skills;
・ Students who would like to study in Australia and other countries in the future;
・ Students who would like to become teachers in the future;
・ Teachers with no training but who would like to improve their skills;
・ Current TESOL trainees who want more practice in teaching and designing course materials.
TESOL Club Activities:
・ Involvement in tutorials run by students on a TESOL topic of their choice with self-made exercises;
・ Learning the basics of group lesson plan design and development for the IELTS, OET, Academic English, and English-for-kids markets;
・ The opportunity to observe and work with experienced ESL teachers;
・ Host JALT (Japan) and ACTESOL (Australia) events;
・ Be part of recruitment activities associated with language teaching in Japan and Australia;
・ Learn how to develop business models for students’ own start-up training services after graduation;
・ Support and organise Australian universities to give their students an ELICOS experience over a 1-4 week period in Japan;
・ Help run Australian university ELICOS courses in Japan, from just a one-week experience to the full course, with qualified TESOL trainers and assessors.
