Fun Bridge English
Fun Bridge officially started in 2014 after successfully using similar programmes in kindergartens across Japan by its creator, Pieter Van Leuven. The programme was developed to get students to not only sing, but also to understand the context of what they were singing, and get more involved and after some practice, to sing the songs without teacher input.
Pieter, a highly qualified and professional teacher of young learners who graduated from top-tier Australian universities, used his extensive experience to create songs that appeal to kids, who want to sing the songs over and over again. The theory behind it was that if you have a successful melody coupled with kids having a fantastic experience with the original song, it can be adapted using the karaoke versions so teacher can change the songs` contents to suit the teaching objective.
There are over 50 songs currently available, which can be changed into five new songs each, meaning there is potentially 250 songs for students to learn. Students can also pick the vocabulary for the song, creating their own version.
Fun Bridge has been taught to kids in Kindergartens and Elementary Schools around Japan. It has also been adopted by the Azalee Group (student body of 1500) Kindergartens since April 2019 after testing all the songs with thousands of kids. Teachers in Korea, Philippines, Vietnam, Myanmar, Europe have expressed interest but at this time the programme has only been available in Japan.
The response has been overwhelmingly positive. After testing the songs in so many different settings, it became apparent that these songs are irresistible to children. The songs have been sung by children from two years old to elementary school age. The reason for their enthusiasm is simple: they feel that they can sing the songs, express themselves, learn and have so much fun in the process.
Students love it and that makes it very attractive for schools. From the teachers’ perspective these songs require very little preparation, are very student focused, and can easily fit the teaching objectives of not only the teacher but the schools as well. An attractive part of the songs is that a teacher can easily create extra activities such as art, games and worksheets all based around the songs. These extra activities help students to come up with new ideas that can then be put into new songs.
Students feel as though they own the music and because of the repetition in the lyrics, students will take ownership of the target language, which is a satisfying feeling for all learners. Parents comment that the kids are singing the songs at home and on their way to class. This makes them very parent-friendly.
